“Maybe the truth about love is that when it’s gone, it leaves a hole in your heart so big it feels like nothing will ever fill it. The idea of risking again feels fatal. A human being can’t possibly lose that much of themselves and still survive. And so you try desperately to fill it with things that never quite do the job. Things that sometimes hurt other people.”
This follow up to Archer’s voice focuses on Travis. Travis, the chief of police, wasn’t always a good guy, but he certainly didn’t expect to walk in on his girlfriend cheating on him with a new stranger in town. That stranger’s sister, Haven Torres had her life fall apart. She thought it best to take her brother and run, hopping form town to town, never staying long. She has her sights set on Gage Buchanan, the town’s most eligible bachelor. After learning what her brother did to Travis, she knew this would be another town which they were passing through. Haven and Travis become friends, helping each other out. Haven starts to see the good in Travis and Travis starts to see all the beauty that makes up Haven. She doesn’t plan to stay, and their simple friendship becomes complicated.
What a book! While personally not as good as Archer’s Voice, it is just a small step below it. I’m thrilled that I learned about this book on Bookstagram! I love Sheridan’s writing style. She is to the point, with everything being so easy to read and it all just flows so naturally. I love the build up between Travis and Haven, and the fact that it never felt like it was happening too fast. It was nice to see Archer and Bree have a supporting role in this book as well. It further extends this world that Sheridan created and makes it feel more realistic. This book is a little bit spicey – for those of you that like spice. But the spice ever seemed forced, or macho. I feel like on top of it all, there is an awakening in this story, and I don’t mean a sexual one. There’s an awakening, or a realization, about love and what it is supposed to be like. I love reading about these men falling so hard for someone as it’s not really seen as much in my world today.
