Death of a Bookseller

By: Alice Slater

BLURB (From Goodreads)

Roach would rather be listening to the latest episode of her favorite true crime podcast than assisting the boring and predictable customers at her local branch of the bookstore Spines, where she’s worked her entire adult life. A serious true crime junkie, Roach looks down her nose at the pumpkin-spice-latte-drinking casual fans who only became interested in the genre once it got trendy. But when Laura, a pretty and charismatic children’s bookseller, arrives to help rejuvenate the struggling bookstore branch, Roach recognizes in her an unexpected kindred spirit.

Despite their common interest in true crime, Laura keeps her distance from Roach, resisting the other woman’s overtures of friendship. Undeterred, Roach learns everything she can about her new colleague, eventually uncovering Laura’s traumatic family history. When Roach realizes that she may have come across her very own true crime story, interest swiftly blooms into a dangerous obsession.

MY REVIEW

I read this book based on a review from a friend. She made this book sound AMAZING. And for her it was. But for me it fell flat. The two MCs are unlikeable – Laura thinks she’s better than everyone and Roach is single white female creepy. I listen and watch true crime podcasts and TV shows, but I don’t become obsessed with them. Roach is obsessed and when she finds out that Laura’s mom was killed by a serial killer, she just becomes too much. I can understand Laura shying away from true crime due to her experience, but even she seemed a little over the top. For most of the book, I felt like it had no plot. Even when the plot came into play, it was underwhelming. Also, there is no literal death that occurs in the book. Laura’s mom might have died, but that happened before the book began. There is a metaphorical death, but that is not enough for me to really call this a thriller. I just call it boring. Read at your own risk.

You can try this book here if you decide you’d like to.
