The St. Ambrose School for Girls

By: Jessica Ward

“You’re more likely to forgive people if you respect them, and you tend to respect people because you’ve seen their strength revealed in a moment of struggle.”

Another book where I am in the minority! Heather arrives at St. Ambrose already knowing that she’s not like the other girls. She wears all black, she doesn’t really have any friends, and she’s on medication. Right off the bat, she makes an enemy of Greta. Greta goes in on her hard, trying to make her life miserable. The only good thing for Heather is her roommate, Ellen “Strots” Strotsberry, who has taken Heather’s side. Heather wants to fly under the radar and just make it through the semester, but Greta has other plans. Then someone ends up dead.

Unfortunately, I found this book rather BORING. For the first 250 pages, the book really is about the pranks that Greta plays on Heather and a scandalous relationship. Not much else going on! Why introduce a murder at the end of the prologue (and in the book synopsis) if the murder doesn’t happen until 2/3’s of the book? Oh yeah, and there’s barely an investigation. The ending wraps up too easily and too quickly.

I also didn’t like the bullying message – that bullies can get away with things because this is a private school where her family has money. I get that this takes place in the 90s and that’s probably a sign of the times, but reading it now just felt icky to me.

A lot of people LOVE this book, and you may too. If you’d like to check it out, you can do so here.
