Five Years From Now

By: Paige Toon

“I know this might be hard to believe right now, but one day, maybe five years from now, you’ll look back and understand why this happened.”

OMG this story was so sweet and full of angst. Nell and Vian/Van met when her father dated his mother after her parents divorced. Vian and his mother, Ruth, came to live with them. But then something tragic occurs and Vian/Van only sees Nell about every 5 years. At age 15 they go from best friends to having feelings for each other. Every 5 years, they reconnect and their feelings grow, but fate doesn’t seem to want them together. Can they make it work? Will they ever get together, and stay together?

I think I resonated with this book because when I was younger, I dated someone that said to me, “even if it’s when we’re old and gray, and 70 or 80 years old, we’ll find out way back to each other.” Nell and Vian always seem to have found their way back to each other, even if it’s just as friends.

Both Nell and Van were great characters. I loved seeing their development, or even lack there of due to unforeseen circumstances. It felt very true to life. My heart broke while reading this book multiple times for various reasons. I even shed some tears.

Did I love the end? No. I was hoping for a slightly different ending, but it was a realistic ending. I would love to see a sequel to this novel.
