Artifacts of an Ex

By: Jennifer Chen

“You have to be willing to be cracked open if you really want to fall in love.”

This was a booksta made me read it book. Chloe moves from NYC to LA. She’s a high school student that wants to be a curator. When she receives a box from Josh, her boyfriend back in New York, she’s shocked to find that he’s breaking up with her. She curates a show where people’s break up boxes are on display. When two guys come in, one is crying over his ex’s breakup box and the other is filming. Chloe approaches Daniel, the one filming, and stops him. But she soon realizes that her and Daniel have a lot in common. But he doesn’t want to be her rebound. While they stay friends, she throws herself into the show that she is creating, Heartifacts. But can they find their way to each other as more than friends, or will Chloe still be hung up on her ex?

This was just an okay book for me. It is a YA read, but it felt like it was lacking a little bit. I loved the idea of the art show – the breakup boxes on display, trying to connect with other people who feel the same way.

It felt really juvenile. I have read YA before but the writing was better. Also, if these two were in high school, how were they not in classes? It was mentioned he had to do an assignment, and I know there was a mention of winter break, but that wasn’t for the whole book. So, how did they accomplish what they did, spend all this time together, and school not be in the way? It was just odd.

I did love the culture that was thrown in there. I seem to be enjoying books with learning about some different cultures, so this book was great in that aspect.

All in all, it was an okay, quick read.
