Night Road

“I read somewhere that grief can be like breaking a bone. You have to set it right or it can ache forever.”

This is another Booksta made me read it book. And I’m glad that I did. Lexi has been in and out of foster care most of her life. But her social worker finds a distant relative who has agreed to take Lexi in. When she starts school, she meets Mia and her twin brother Zach. While Lexi and Zach try to stay away from each other, then eventually reveal that they have feelings for each other. The three are then inseparable. However, a tragic night changes all of their lives forever. With Mia and Zach’s mom, Jude, wanting justice, it is Lexi who finds herself in trouble. Then she returns, and at first she was going to disappear, but she changes her mind. Everyone now needs to face their feelings and determine how their future will play out.

Wow. What a book. There is so much to touch on here. This book is about friendship, love, family, and forgiveness. I tend to not read much of this author because she writes a lot of historical fiction for time periods I don’t have an interest in. But this was very different. Any more of these by this author, and I’ll read them.

The friendship between Lexi and Mia was beautiful. The relationship between Lexi and Zach was equally as beautiful. But the chord that struck me the most was how real and raw Jude’s grief felt. As mothers, we always are told we have to be strong for our families. Even if it’s us that is telling ourselves that. But everyone processes grief in a different way and I have a feeling that I would have processed grief had I been put in the same situation.

Lexi’s growth in the book is also done very well. she has had a hard life and it never gets easier for her. The amount of maturity she already comes to the table with in high school is more than most high schoolers. And that is a result of her circumstances. But the fact that at her age she is willing to take responsibility for her actions, and also be mindful of her Aunt, is unheard of. Then she just continues to grow and grow. She wants everyone around her to be happy and have a good life. Even with her life, she still always puts everyone else first.

I don’t want to go on and on because I don’t want to spoil the book. I really think that this is a good read for anyone.
