“You were so scared we were going to fracture that you broke us first.”
I read this book for a book club and it was just eh for me. Joni, Evangeline, and Bess went to Greece the summer after high school. But only two returned – Jodi and Bess. Evangeline died there; Jodi and Bess were cleared of any involvement in her death. Now it’s 10 years later and not only is it the anniversary of Ev’s death, but Jodi finds herself mixed up in another crime that is similar to that of Ev’s death. While she and Bess haven’t stayed close through the years, but now Jodi ask’s for Bess’ help. What really happened the night of Ev’s death, and what’s going on now.
This book had chapters from the present, 2018, and chapters from the past, 2008. We learn A LOT about the girls and their background. Probably more than necessary; it got very boring at times. I personally think that it could have been cut down.
The book just felt really long and drawn out. It felt like a long slow burn. It felt like things were never happening. There wasn’t much action to begin at all.
My BIGGEST issue about this book? It felt like SO MUCH was taken from the Amanda Knox story out of Italy. And I did read the “behind the book” to see if the author said that she drew any influence from that event, but she did not mention it. When I say that things were taken from the real life event, I mean from the way the media portrayed the girls, to the way that they were acting after Ev died, to the court case – though the ending of that wasn’t the same. It just felt so reminiscent.
Lastly, the ending SUCKED. I wanted to know more about certain things, but I don’t want to say what they are as I don’t want to give anything away.
I genuinely don’t know how it was a Reese book.
