The Heiress

By: Rachel Hawkins

“There should be some kind of warning when your life is about to change forever.”

I read this for my #roarreads book club! It’s a great book club pick. When Ruby McTavish dies, she is the richest woman in North Carolina. She owns the Ashby estate and has a hold over the town of Tavistock. Leaving behind a sister, and other family, she leaves everything she owns to her adopted son, Camden. Cam doesn’t want it and stays away from NC and his family. Then his uncle dies and he and his wife, Jules, find themselves back in NC, back at the Ashby mansion. But everyone is hiding something….

This was such an enjoyable and smart book. Hawkins wrote a thriller that keeps you guessing throughout the entire book. Told in three different points of view, Camden, Jewels, and Ruby via letters. I liked seeing their different perspectives and with all the characters in the book, these three were enough.

Each of the characters were strong, morally gray characters with distinct personalities. The setting for most of the book was Ashby mansion. And while I don’t know where Hawkins’ inspiration was for the mansion, I kept thinking of The Biltmore.

I think this would be a great book turned TV series or movie. It’s addictive and engrossing. I would highly recommend this to anyone that hasn’t already read it.
