Ugh, why did I read this? Ashley Smith is an American girl going to school in England. When Emma Chapman invites her to her home for Christmas, Ashley is thrilled! Ashley is an orphan, she doesn’t have any family. Ashley is having a great time with Emma, but learns that there had been a murder in the town. The main suspect was Emma’s twin brother, Adam. But Adam is sweet to Ashley, and she can’t get him out of her mind. Ashley doesn’t know if she’s in a romance novel, or a gothic thriller – whichever it is, she better find out fast!
I really do not resonate with this author. I hated the formatting of this book. There’s the regular prose, the diary entries, and the conversations that are told almost in a script format. The LONG diary entries written in italics really bothered me. They were also really boring. A lot of it could have been cut out and the main plot of the story still would have been there.
Was there a twist? Yes! Did I see it coming? No. So I am able to give this book two stars for that, but that will be about it.
I could just not get into this one. Reading it felt like a chore. If I DNF’d books, I would have with this one, but I don’t DNF books. I always hope that there is something redeeming.
