Where There’s Smoke

By: Jodi Picoult

“Sometimes, all you can do is watch things burn, and wait for the ash to settle.”

This may be a short story, but it is filled with SO much goodness! Serenity knew as an early child she had psychic abilities. Now, she is a medium with a widely viewed TV show where she helps her guests connect with someone on the other side. But then she encounters a poltergeist and tries to help find a missing boy. Things don’t go as planned and her career as she knows it, may be over.

Jodi Picoult is such a good writer that in these 36 pages, this feels like a full story. There’s nothing missing at all within these pages, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don’t know if I believe in mediums, but this definitely made me think. I think I could be made into a believer if I encountered someone like Serenity.

This is a prequel to Leaving Time, which I plan to read soon so that Serenity is fresh in my mind.

I love Jodi Picoult, so you’ll always see me recommend her books!
