“I often think life is just a performance. None of this is real. It’s a pretense at reality, that’s all.”
Am I the problem with this one? Lana is an ex-movie star who owns an island in Greece. She invites her friends to join her on a trip. They are essentially trapped on the island, and there is a murder.
So… there was so much hype created for this book, and for me, it was just a let down. The narrator, Chase Elliot, was on of Lana’s friends on the island with her. I found him to be a bit annoying. I didn’t think he was unreliable, but I didn’t enjoy this “fourth wall” break that I normally do. I disliked almost all of the characters, minus Lana’s son and employee
One of the biggest problems this book has is how SLOW it is. I loathe slow burns – and this one kept me bored almost the entire time. I wasn’t even slightly interested until there was some action at the end.
I did read this author’s first book, The Silent Patient, and I loved it! I didn’t read his second book, but I’m hoping it’s better than this one. Also – a lot of people say that there’s a spoiler in this book about The Silent Patient, but since I skimmed a lot, I probably missed it.
Alas, not every book is going to resonate with every reader. This one didn’t do it for me, but it may for someone else.
