Home Is Where The Bodies Are

By: Jeneva Rose

“Guilt can eat you slowly or swallow you whole.”

I enjoyed this one better than Rose’s last book! Three estranged siblings come together after their mother has passed. There’s Michael, who “made something of himself”, Nicole, a drug addict, and Beth, the one who stayed and took care of their mother. While going through their mother’s things, they find VHS tapes. They pop one in to watch, and at the end, they find a recording of their father covered in blood and a decision made between their mother and father to get rid of the body. Should the siblings tell the authorities, should they let it go, should they tell the family of the deceased? What is uncovered is more secrets that anyone can handle.

So for about a little more than half the book, I struggled. I thought I was going to be as disappointed with this one as I was with the last one. I kept reading, and it did get better. I just wish Rose wouldn’t take so long for the action to occur. She spends the first half of the book on the setup – or at least it feels this way.

I have read other reviews that say that the plot is predictable. Well, for me it wasn’t. I didn’t see where this was going at all! So for me, that was fantastic! I was genuinely shocked when the who and the why were revealed.

Also, the mother left letters the three children. We get to see what one of them says, but what about the other two? Curious minds want to know what was in them!

Character development was a little lackluster, Nicole had the best arc and probably had the most depth.

Overall, a decent book – 3.5 stars!
