“That’s what it’s like when you leave one life behind and slip into another – the old one haunts you.
I’ve seen this book compared a lot to the Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie case and personally, I just didn’t see it, especially once I got fully through it. Years ago, Cassie was part of a rescue where a girl Cameron was found dead on trail. Only, Cassie knew Cameron personally. They were once really good friends. Cameron’s boyfriend, Chris, left Cassie on the trail to get help, but when he left her she was alive. When they found her, she wasn’t. Now it seems like history is repeating itself with Jada and Jim missing. As Cassie has her own reasons for joining the rescue team again, namely running from her husband, she meets other campers including Petal and Sandy. Petal and Jada become friendly. But then Petal goes missing too.
This book was just okay for me. It was a little slower than I would have liked. It felt like it took a while to set up the plot. It was hinted at why Cassie left her husband but it wasn’t confirmed for while. And then the ending came and it was one big giant spiderweb that took me a bit to follow and keep straight. Though, I did like that one of the characters really surprised me.
I did love the setting – Yosemite National Park. I’ve never been there but I have always wanted to go. The scenes with the bear (Smokey) were fantastic; is bear court a real thing? I found that part to be so interesting.
