If You Tell a Lie

By: Lucinda Berry

“Do you know how much work it takes to pretend like you’re fine every day”

This was a different kind of Lucinda Berry book for me. 4 girls, Meg, Blakely, Grace, and Thera attend Camp Pendleton as kids. They are basically losers in school and this camp is for them. Here, they stand out and are popular. Their senior year Mr. Crosby joins the staff teaching tennis and Blakely sets her sights on him. He winds up murdered after a terrible lie and these girls swear themselves to secrecy. Twenty-Six years later they all receive a note saying that someone knows what they’ve done. They all meet up at Blakely’s house and once again, things aren’t what they seem.

So I’ve read a number of Berry books and I’ve loved the ones that I’ve read. This has to be the first one that I didn’t love. This didn’t feel like a thriller to me. This felt more like a drama, and a really boring drama.

It’s told in two different timelines, the then and the now, between the four different characters. So there is a LOT to follow. It was really slow paced up until the end, and then it felt very rushed. I didn’t particularly like the ending. I wanted to know some of the character motivations and the book kind of left questions about other characters. I didn’t like any of the characters. There may have been one possibly redeeming one, but then eh.

This is probably my least favorite Berry book, unfortuately.

If you’re interested, however, you can check it out here.
