Many thanks to the author for the gifted copy of this book!
This was a tad bit of a different read for me, but it was really good!!! Matthew Chia wants more for his life. Working in his parents’ restaurant wasn’t going to cut it for him for the rest of his life. One morning he sees a man in a red sports car and knows that’s what he wants. Offers to clean his house in exchange for being taught stocks. Mr. Lee agrees, gives him a summer internship. Then he agrees to pay for college in exchange for monthly favors. Then he gets Matthew to quit college for a job. Before he knows it, Matthew is in something deep, something dark. He now has the money he wanted, but at what cost?
The book started out a little slow for me, but then it steadily built up. Once Matthew got under Mr. Lee’s grasp, he couldn’t get out from under it, and he felt trapped. But Matthew is also blinded by the wealth and power. This book is the prime example of why power and wealth are not always a good thing, especially if it comes at a huge cost and makes you do things that are awful. Matthew begins to grapple with everything he’s done and what he’s being asked to do. He can’t trust anyone, and he doesn’t know where to turn.
There are so many twists in this story, I felt like I was going to get whiplash! But it never felt like it was too much or over the top. The end of the book left me with a WTH! moment, but then the author explains that there will be a part 2. I can’t wait to read that and see how everything plays out.
This book is out now, so check it out here!
