Many thanks to Harper Perennial and NetGalley for the ARC of this book!
I haven’t read this author before, but I know that I definitely want to go back and read her other books! Augusta Monet, Gus, loses the love of her life when he disappears never to be found. She spends so much time looking for him to no avail. Three years later, she finds out that his parents are having a celebration of life for him. It seems that the camper he was driving was found, but his body was not. His parents presume he’s dead. Gus and her daughter, Bly, still believe he is alive and will stop at nothing to find him. Finding his notebook and a video, they follow clues that he left behind so that they can figure out what he had gotten himself into and where he could be. But someone is hot on their trail and doesn’t like that they are too close to figuring it out.
This book was written just so well. It’s written in one voice, that of Bly. It’s interesting that you get the story from the child’s point of view instead of the significant other’s. Most authors would have picked Gus’ point of view, so if I ever had a chance to ask this author why she made this choice, I would. Aside from that, her storytelling is just so impressive. She keeps you on the edge of your seat in this past paced thriller. Oh! Also, it’s part of a series (which I didn’t know), but can totally be read as a standalone. However, I did question why Bly was calling her mother Gus, and I bet that’s answered in one of the other books.
I thought the ending was well done. The reason as to why things happened was very different than other books that I’ve read. I was thrown that characters I thought I could trust, I shouldn’t have, and characters I thought I couldn’t trust, I could have! It really shows a great talent when an author can do that!
I highly suggest that you add this book to your TBR, or pre-order it now!
You can find it here, it’ll be out on December 3!
