“Love was a bunch of small things that added up to bigger things.”
Magical realism isn’t normally my type of genre, but couple it with romance and make it written by Ashley Poston and I’m going to read it! Eileen is a bookie – she’s like us! She loves to read! Alongside her friend Pru, they start a book club and then they meet up once a year in the Hudson Valley in New York. But this year, no one else can go but Eileen. So Eileen takes off on the drive to the cabin alone. But it begins to rain and she stops in a quaint town where her car breaks down. She stays overnight and the next day as she is out meeting people she realizes that the town she’s in is the fictional town from her favorite books by romance author Rachel Flowers. But there’s one character that she can’t place, Anders. He’s not in any of the books, though the series never did finish. While she waits for her car to be fixed, she becomes intertwined in the town and thinks she may not want to leave, even though Anders doesn’t want her to stay.
This book is so cute! I really enjoyed the concept of Eileen driving through a town and then it being the fictional town of her favorite book series by her favorite author. And while I’m sure there are other books out there that may use this plot, I have not read them (at least not yet!) I also really enjoyed the quaint town. From the shops to the people, all of it sounded like it would be someplace that I would love to visit! The cast of characters were really great.
The downfall of this book was what occurred between Eileen and Anders. I believe Eileen was in the town for about 5ish days. They started off not really caring for each other, and then slowly became friendly. Then all of a sudden it was BAM I was to be with you, and I love you. I never felt any tension. I never felt any build up. I didn’t believe the romance between the two of them. Really, this book felt more like a self-growth book with Eileen’s overcoming heartache and becoming more confident in who she is and what she wants.
This book is enjoyable and there were plenty of times throughout the book that I was reading with a smile on my face so I do recommend the book, just don’t go into it expecting a hardcore romance novel.
