All The Colors of the Dark

By: Chris Whitaker

“I just wanted to show you that sometimes things survive despite the harshest of odds.”

In a small town in Missouri, girls are going missing. One girl, Misty, is targeted but she is saved by Patch. This story follows the lives of Patch, his friend Saint, Misty (a little bit), throughout the years and what happens after Patch saves Misty. This book is VERY long and if I really went into the “plot” – not only would I be giving a lot away, this review would equally be as long (which I don’t want to do).

A lot of people describe this book as “literary” and “character driven” as opposed to plot driven. I describe the first 50% of this book as utterly boring and in need of some major edits. I do not DNF books, and if I wasn’t reading this for book club, I actually would have DNF’d this book. The chapters are VERY short; I mean most of them are 1-3 pages long which makes the story feel very choppy. There is so much useless prose in the first 50% of the book that I honestly skimmed a lot of it.

Now, after the 50%, there was a little more plot and the storyline got a little better. The story touts itself as being a thriller, but this is really a slow burn thriller which makes it a boring thriller. Things did pick up, but I wouldn’t personally characterize this book as a thriller. Were there some things that I didn’t see coming? Sure – bravo to the author for surprising me. But honestly, that’s not hard to do. This book also claims to be a romance but that sort of fails for me too.

I realize that I am an outlier here and so many loved it. That’s okay! Not every book is going to be for everyone. I read this author before and that book tons of people loved and I didn’t. I really think that this particular author is just not for me.
