The Reading List

“Please try to remember that books aren’t always an escape; sometimes book teach us things. They show us the world; they don’t hide it.”

Mukesh is a widower who is lonely. He shops every Wednesday, worries about his granddaughter Priya, and goes to Temple. He just misses his wife. Aleisha is a teenager who is working at the local library for the summer to help out at home. Her mother is struggling and her brother does most of the caretaking. When she finds a list of books she decides to read them. When Mukesh shows up at the library, she passes along the books on that list, and the two form an unlikely bond over these books.

When I stated the book, I was really iffy about it. Though, I did start it without reading the synopsis. What the book turned out to be was a heartwarming read about two characters that formed an unlikely bond over books to help them each through a tumultuous time in their life. The books brought together the characters, and the books helped both of the characters heal.

It was really nice to read about Mukesh opening up to the world and get out of his sadness shell. He was such a bright character once he did. I loved reading his character arc. Aleisha starts out as a typical teenager but she has a wonderful character arc as well; she matured throughout the book and appreciated the books, but also appreciated what other people metaphorically bring to the table.

While I wasn’t dying to read this book every moment of the day, it was a great debut novel. I think with time, this author will really hone her craft and be fantastic.

If you’re in the mood for a heartwarming book, try this one out. You can find it here.
