The Dollhouse Academy

By: Margarita Monitmore

“Go home while you’re still nobody.”

The Dollhouse Academy is an ultra secretive, elite boarding school for those that are blessed with talent and star power. Ivy has been the most popular start to come out of there in the last 18 years. After appearing on a TV show, Ramona and Grace now have their chance. In awe of the campus, both girls are thrilled to be there. While Grace takes off with her talent, Ramona falls behind all while receiving creepy warning notes. Grace is catapulted into stardom, and Ramona is close to being thrown out of the Academy. But there is something else more sinister happening, and Ramona is determined to figure it out.

I was SO excited to read this book, I absolutely loved the concept. However, this book fell flat for me. I was expecting a mystery or a thriller, something with suspense, a book that was going to leave me on the edge of my seat wanting more. What I read was more akin to just general fiction, which is fine, but when you’re expecting one thing and you get another, it’s a let down. It felt like to took forever to set the story up, and then get to the point of the story. The “mystery” aspect of it was a slow burn that it didn’t get interesting until the last 20ish pages.

All of the characters lacked depth. I don’t know if that was a choice made by the author due the choice of profession of these characters or not. But there was no great character growth here.

This book had so much potential, and for me, it just didn’t work very well. BUT, I’ve seen so much love for it, so maybe you’ll like it. Just remember, it’s more general fiction!
