Aid workers Will, Melanie, and Jon find themselves in a terrible incident that sends them all to the hospital and back home. Will and Katie have divorced, but Will is going to need around the clock the care. Katie agrees to be Will’s caregiver, so she and their daughter Phoebe moves into Will’s house for a few weeks to take care of him. The divorce was supposed to make things easier for Katie; the divorce was supposed to make her worry less. This time with Will makes her realize that maybe it didn’t do what she thought it was doing.
This is book 1 in the Aftermath novella series. While this is a romance novella, this really has some very deep themes. There are so many people who have loved ones that are in the military, or are government contractors, and go into dangerous situations. Families go months without seeing their loved ones, sometimes days, weeks, months without hearing from them. It’s hard for all members of the family – those that are at home waiting, and those that are in the position. I would have loved to see some deeper discussions between Katie and Will about this. I do think that the author did a great job of providing both perspectives and let the reader get in the head of both characters.
Will is amazing with this daughter, Phoebe. Even though he isn’t around all the time, he seems just have a special way with her no matter the time and distance. It was really so heartwarming to read.
There are some very realistic scenes in here as a matter of recovery. Elias dealt with these scenes with dignity and care. I think there is something very special about this book, Elias’ ideas, and Elias’ writing style.
