Many thanks to Books Forward for the ARC of this book!
Eleanora Finkel started the LGBTQ+ club in her high school, but life has an “out” high school student hasn’t been easy for her and her friends. They are constantly bullied. They decide to skip the pep rally to decorate their club meeting room. When they come out of the room, they find that the head cheerleader has been attacked. Now, they are being looked at as suspects. The principal disbands the club and is very suspicious of these students. The police don’t seem to be doing a very good job. So the only way to clear their names is for them to figure it all out themselves.
This is an okay book. This is a ya mystery with a bit of some fun on the side. I wouldn’t say that it’s a fully blown mystery because there is nothing suspenseful or atmospheric about it. There is no murder, but an assault. So a whodunit in terms of the assault would be a better way to describe this book.
The book is set in present times and you know that by a few modern day mentions, such as music artist Chappell Roan. However, there was hardly any texting in this book, and no social media use.
Certain aspects of this book felt very stereotypical, which is okay I guess. There are definitely still those that are bullied in high school for being apart of the LGBTQ+ community. I think this book will help those that are experiencing the same feel like they aren’t alone.
The story did feel like it dragged on a bit; it wasn’t one of those that I needed to read because I had to know what happened. Some of the characters were slightly annoying, including Eleanora at times. One of the “twists” I had figured out really early on. I have read plenty of YA books that I’ve really enjoyed, I think this one just didn’t work for me due to the writing style.
I’ve seen reviews on this book and others have loved it! So as always, this only my opinion. Just because this book didn’t become my favorite, doesn’t mean it won’t become yours!
