By: Rachel Yoder

By day, she’s a mother to a toddler. By night, she’s turning into something else. She finds weird patches of hair, her canine teeth seem sharper, and a weird bump with hair near her lower back. She believes she is turning into a dog!
So this book was definite NOT for me. I didn’t get it. I still don’t get it. I don’t get why so many people liked it, or even loved it. I’m not even sure what I just read! I may have missed something because I’ll be honest, I just started skimming it because I really wanted to DNF the book. It was the only way to “get through it.”
The first thing that didn’t work for me was the choice by the author to not use quotation marks around dialogue. I know its personal preference, but it helps break the writing up for me. So not having that really didn’t help break up this strange story. The second thing that didn’t work for me is that none of the characters had real names. The mother in this story was only ever referred to as “The Mother.” Why can we not give the character a name? Is it so that we can see ourselves in the character? I can see relate to a character that has a name. The third thing that did not work for me was the animal cruelty in the book. That is a hard no for me. It was completely unnecessary.
I’m a mother. I was really hoping to relate to this character, but alas, I did not. Maybe I missed the point of the book. I don’t know. At this point, if I did, I don’t really care. This book is probably better suited for someone who likes to dissect books for literary reasons – that’s not me.
