The Devil’s Advocate

By: Steve Cavanagh

Many thanks to Atria books for the gifted copy of this book!

Prosecutor Randal Korn has the highest conviction/death penalty/execution rate. He lives to watch them die, even if they are innocent. So when a young girl, Skylar, is found murdered, Korn has no problem charging an innocent boy for the crime. Between bribes, making people disappear, making evidence disappear, and jury tampering, Korn will stop at nothing to make sure he gets his conviction. Enter Eddie Flynn and his team. They will stop at nothing to make sure that their client, Andy Dubois, is not convicted. But in this small town, where they are not welcomed, will they be able to succeed?

Wow, this was a great book. This installment of the Eddie Flynn series is one of the better ones that I have read. It’s fast paced, there is action, and Cavanagh has such a way with words that you just want to keep reading. I wanted to know how Eddie and his team were going to fight against the corrupt Korn. It seemed to me like they had absolutely zero chance. But I’ve never worked in criminal defense (I’ve only worked on the civil side of things), so I don’t quite have the mind to think that way! Just the way that the team handled everything was brilliant.

Cavanagh also does such a great job making sure we hate the characters that we are supposed to hate – the “morally grey” ones. Though in this book, Korn was more than just morally grey. He was downright immoral. I was so disgusted with him.

There was an aspect of this story that was about racism, but I don’t want to say much more than that. I could have done with out this part of it. I’m not so sure the story needed it. It did add an extra layer and it also provided some other information, but otherwise, it was an eh storyline for me.

This book is out now, and a must read!
