Role Play

By: Kay Cove

Many thanks to Valentine PR for the ARC of this book!

Sora Cho-Cooper is a romance author, but she’s an indie author; her sales aren’t great, she’s had some really negative reviews, and to top it off, her father is a successful author. She meets Forrest, who is an escort, and decides to enter into an agreement with him. He and his daughter can stay with her in her brownstone so that Hannah, Dakota’s mother, won’t make Daktoa go to a boarding school, and in return, he will act out typical romance tropes so that Sora has real life romance experience to write about, including the billionaire, masked men, and country men. Sometimes Forrest plays these parts so well, Sora can’t tell whether or not it’s real or fake, but her heart is certainly feeling something. Is this just a paycheck for Forrest?

I enjoyed the plot of this book, the bones of the story is really good. There are some really cute moments, and there are some really great heartwarming moments. In fact, it’s not just the relationship between Forrest and Sora’s relationship that I enjoyed, but the relationship that develops between Sora and Dakota, the growth of the relationship between Sora and her dad, and between Forrest and his dad. All of the characters are well written, and while we can’t like the all, they were who they had to be for this story.

More than just romance, this book explores the struggles of authors – their self doubt, how it must feel to read negative reviews, coming up with stories and plot lines, trying to makes sales etc.. It also explores how far parents go, or don’t go, for their children, and how they perceive that their actions are protecting when in fact, the children may perceive it a different way.

My ONLY issue with this book is that it was too long. I honestly think that it could have still gotten ALL this in with less pages. I was about 28% into the book when the plot started to form. In a book this long, that’s a pretty long time. Other than that, I really enjoyed the book.

It’s out now, and I really think you should give it a try!
