With A Vengeance

By: Riley Sager

Set in 1942, Anna Matheson has lured 6 people onto a train headed to Chicago. These 6 people are responsible for destroying her family, and now she wants her version of revenge. They can’t get off the train. She wants them to confess; when they reach Chicago, they will be arrested. As the train ride proceeds on, the 6 start to slowly get killed off. But who is responsible, and why are they doing it? Will anyone, including Anna, make it off the train alive?

This book was a struggle for me. It was extremely slow. This is a classic closed door whodunit. It felt like every other chapter Anna had another suspect. It felt a little like “You get a car, and you get a car” except it was “you’re the killer, no you’re the killer!” There wasn’t much action until the end of the book.

One thing I personally struggled with was remembering the time period of the book. People kept touching evidence and I kept screaming STOP TOUCHING THE EVIDENCE. At some point, I had to remind myself we aren’t in modern days and there was no DNA technology in the 1950s. This one is on me though for forgetting.

I really loved The House Across the Lake by this author, so this book was disappointing compared to that book. I felt like I was forcing myself to read it, and I was. I read this for a book club.

Anyway, once again, this is just this book addict’s opinion. Take it as you want 🙂
