Many thanks to the author of this book for the ARC!
Annabelle moves to a new town just a bit ago and wanted to go out for a nightly run. Her mother warned her not to go, but she went anyway. Annabelle is kidnapped. She wakes on a cold hard floor. A man enters, silent as to why she was abducted and gives her four instructions. Annabelle knows that she needs to escape, or she won’t be leaving alive. The man is a monster who is playing a sick game that she doesn’t understand. And there may be another kidnapped woman in the house, proof of life is uncertain. As days turn into nights and nights turn into days, Annabelle is still there.. chained. Who is this man that has abducted her and why? Will she make it out?
I have read quite of few of this author’s books and this is BY FAR my favorite one! This book is gripping and dark, suspenseful, and twisty. All of the elements that I love in my thrillers. Guerrero does not waste any time with the set up so that the book really focuses the plot. Guerrero weaves the past and the present together to not only bring alive well rounded characters, but to provide a sense of escape for Annabelle. It was brilliant.
Her parents were desperate to find her and may have done one or two shady things. I’m not sure that I’d do them if my kid was missing, but I’d do as much as I could if my kid was missing. It was still nice to read about these parents that were doing a bit more than just pleading to the public about their missing child.
Then there are the twists… oh the twists. There were some smaller twists, and then there were some jaw dropping moments. Obviously I won’t tell you what they are because I don’t want to give anything away. However, I was taken. The first major twist shook me to my core, as it did Annabelle. What was so great about Annabelle though was her strength, even when her bodily was physically weak, she mentally provided herself strength. She wanted to live.
There are some trigger warnings at the beginning of the book, so if you’re sensitive to triggers, please read them because this book at times is dark. However, if you’re not triggered, then this is a MUST READ. It’s out now so please, go grab a copy and read it!
