Veterinarian Joy Winters gets home early from work and walks in on her boyfriend with another woman. He blames the fact that she always works. She needs to get out and the apartment is his. Her clinic is closed for the month due to renovations. She sees a posting on Craigslist for a vet needed for somewhere in Maine. She agrees to go help and meets Jaime, the owner of the reindeer sanctuary, and his two daughters. He just needs to keep the sanctuary running, keep the reindeer healthy, and help another give birth. Enter Joy. She throws herself into helping the reindeer and in constant proximity to Jamie. Soon enough, sparks start to fly. However, she’s only supposed to be there for a month, and then go back to NY and her clinic.
This is such a sweet and spicy, cozy Christmas novella. I appreciated that Joy wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows, with her heart on her sleeve. She is the “grumpy sunshine” here and I could relate. Due to her parents’ divorce, she has been closed off. I used to be the same way. But then comes Jaime, and he cracks her heart wide open.
I do wish this book was longer. I could have read these characters in a full length novel. Not that anything was wrong with this novella, I just loved these characters so much I didn’t want to be done with them so quickly! I also would have liked it a little longer so that the romance didn’t feel so rushed.
