About the Book

A rookie with a past he’s never fully confronted, Andrew Coates is unprepared for what he uncovers when cold-case details start aligning across multiple unsolved murders. Assigned the newest connected homicide, he sorts through unreliable timelines, strained family recollections, and a pattern that refuses to stay one step ahead. A fifth victim’s narrow survival introduces both a new lead and a relationship that disrupts his sense of detachment. Andrew, abandoned at birth and raised in foster care, begins to sense that the questions he’s chasing at work echo the questions he’s avoided all his life.

My Review

Todd-Beshore writes a very suspenseful police procedural/crime thriller. It is very clear that either she is well knowledgeable in police procedures, or she has done a ton of research to get it right. This book is broken into two parts, which a different case happening in each part, the personal storylines follow throughout. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize this going into the book so I was rather confused about how we got part 2 and it was a different case. I was going along with it thinking it would tie to part 1 somehow, but it didn’t. Regardless of that, each of the cases were told very well. There was a lot of action and I was kept guessing as to who the suspect was in each. There were some really great twists as well.

There is also a romance in this book, but I didn’t buy it. I’m not a big fan of insta-love, and that’s what this is. I liked that the detective had someone to be his home base after seeing what he was seeing and dealing with every day, but the rushed proposal was too much for me personally, but I know there are a ton of readers that like this trope! I just wish there was more of them dating, so that I could feel the fall in love, so that I could feel the chemistry of them together.

I love the way that Detective Coates was written. He’s a rookie detective who got stuck on cold cases. Then a new case connects them. But Coates isn’t perfect, he makes mistakes, he sometimes is quick to make a judgment. He doesn’t have the “gut instinct” that the veteran detectives have. In sum, he is just a very believable character.

So if you’re looking for a great police procedural filled with suspense that will keep you guessing, try this one out!
