The Christmas Murder Game

By: Alexandra Benedict

“Knowledge can lead to death.”

Lily hasn’t been back to Endgame house in 21 years, when her mother died. Now she’s invited back for another round of the Christmas Game. The winner this year will win the deed to the house. Lily doesn’t want the house, but she does want to find out what happened to her mother. Now Lily has to compete with her cousins to find a secret room in the house. It’s cold, snowy, there’s no phone lines, and things are getting deadly.

The premise of this book sounded SO good. We picked it for our book club read. But the book wasn’t great. There is about three story lines going on in this book, the game to find the deed, what happened to Lily’s mother, and who is murdering people. The problem is that the author seemed to struggle with juggling these story lines. The first half of the book focused on one story line, Lily’s mother, and then it switched. All of the first chapters were full of flowery prose and no action. It was kind of boring. When the murders started, the family members didn’t seem to care and kept on playing the game. It was all so odd.

Towards the end, there was a bit more action and it got a little bit more interesting. But it wasn’t enough for it to be redeeming. The whole book just fell flat.

The author did put some puzzles inside the book for the reader to find, I didn’t care enough about them, but I’m sure some will love that!
