The Obsession

By: Natasha Preston

I hadn’t heard of this book until @msmichelledawn told us she was reading it. She has really good recommendations, so I borrowed it from the library. Connie is the main character in this book. She’s a 16 year old and lives with her mom and older sister. Her mom has a very successful VLOG where she films their lives. It’s allowed them to buy a huge house and be set for college. Her mom and her sister leave to go visit colleges, and Connie finds that she’s getting weird comments on her Insta, that she has a stalker, and then girls around her keep getting attacked. Who is this person, and will they get to Connie?

When I finished this book, I didn’t know how to feel. Parts of the book I really enjoyed, and parts of the book were just okay. Let’s start with the characters. Connie was an easy character to like. I felt for her as I was reading the book. She mom was annoying and self centered, and her friends and boyfriend seemed to bail on her easily. She really needed better people in her life. Though, they claimed to care about her, but who abandons their friend? Needless to say, Connie was the only really likeable character.

I enjoyed the plot. The terrors of video blogging? The comments that they videos get? The pressure of the mother to keep it going? Having a stalker? YES PLEASE! Most of this was executed really well. I was along for the ride the whole book. Of course I fell for the author’s red herring. Really, it was an internal dialogue for me – “No that’s what the author wants me to think” – “Well, it really does make sense, and I can’t figure anything else out.” Well, the author certainly tricked me! I didn’t see the reveal coming at all!!

The only thing that got me, and it made me not love the book as much, is that I didn’t like the ending at all. I originally thought it was left open ended and I didn’t like the cliffhanger. Then I discussed the book and then said, “okay, I can see how the ending can be interpreted that way.” Either way, I still feel like it was left hanging one way or another. I could have used an epilogue.

Overall a decent read, but don’t be surprised if you’re mad at how it ends!
