The Girls Who Grew Big

By: Leila Mottley

Sixteen year old Adela Woods is pregnant. Her parents send her away to Florida to stay with her grandmother. This story follows her journey. While she is in Florida, she meets Emory, who introduces her to the Girls – other teenage moms, some of whom don’t have a real home. The girls navigate life with kids, love, school, and the future.

Honestly, I didn’t care for this book at all. There was no real plot. I was bored out of my mind reading this book. Actually, I wound up skimming a lot of it. Were there interesting moments? Yes. But overall, the book could not keep my interest.

I read the ebook and it was over 500 pages! 500 pages! It was reading 500 pages of zero plot! I know that I’m repeating myself here, but it was so difficult to get through. I could have DNF’d it, but I didn’t because it was the book club pick for my neighborhood book club.

I couldn’t connect with any of the girls. I am a mom, though I wasn’t a teenage mom. And it really has nothing to do with their being teenage moms. It was their personalities. None of them was really likeable at all. They were one dimensional. The first chapter/prologue (I don’t remember what it was) threw me too because of the vulgar ways things were described.

I am an outlier here. This book has glowing reviews. It just wasn’t for me.
