The Inmate

By: Freida McFadden

“Sometimes people do exactly what you think they’re going to do, and they still manage to disappoint you.

Brooke Sullivan, a nurse practitioner, moves to her hometown with her son, Josh. The only job she is able to find is in a men’s prison. The prison, so desperate for someone, failed to look at Brooke’s connection to the prison. Brooke’s high school sweetheart, Shane Nelson, is in the prison for a series of terrible that occurred when Brooke was in high school. What they also don’t know is that it was Brooke’s testimony that helped convict Shane and land him in prison. Now Shane is trying to convince Brooke that it wasn’t him, but if it wasn’t him, who was it?

One of the things I like best about McFadden’s writing, is that it is straight and to the point. There’s no useless information or needless descriptions. Every word that she writes matters to the story. This book is fast paced and action packed. I enjoyed the plot, it wasn’t anything that I’ve read before! While I was reading, I really went back and forth about who was responsible for the murders, but the twist was one that I NEVER saw coming!! What a surprise! The ONLY reason that I didn’t give it 5 stars, was that I found Brooke to be rather annoying – she flip flops so easily and it drove me insane. It felt more like she was thinking like a high schooler rather than an adult responsible for a 10 year old child.

This is a definite must read. You can get your copy of the book here.
