The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

By: Taylor Jenkins Reid

“When you’re given an opportunity to change your life, be ready to do whatever it takes to make it happen. The world doesn’t give things, you take things.”

Legendary Hollywood icon Evelyn Hugo has led a glamorous life filled with scandal and secrets. Now, she wants to sit down and tell the truth about her life; the real truth about herself and the identity she portrayed. She seeks out Monique Grant, a lowly writer for magazine Vivant, to speak with her and have her write an authorized biography of her life. Monique arrives daily at Evelyn’s luxurious apartment to listen to Evelyn Hugo tell her life story – everything from how she moved out to Hollywood, how she got started in the movies, her decision to retire from acting, and of course, her seven husbands. As Monique listens, she has one question – why did Evelyn choose Monique?

This is a beautifully and brilliantly written novel. The way that the author wrote Evelyn Hugo as being unapologetically honest was something that I haven’t seen before, but something that I think is needed in more books. I love the socio-political, tabu aspect of the book. It made me wish Evelyn Hugo was real, and alive to see how much things have progressed. Reid makes you feel all the emotions that Evelyn was feeling; I definitely shed quite a few tears reading this book.

This book was very refreshing. I haven’t read anything like this before. This would make a wonderful movie.
