You Can Become Someone: It’s Your Life!

By: Anita Onli

Thank you to the author, Anita Onli, for the gifted copy of this book!

Isobel has her life planned out for her; her mother knows best and expects her to follow the plan.  Go to school, get good grades, go to Uni, get a job, get married, and have children.  Isobel, while sometimes butt heads with her mother, always did as expected.  She graduated from Uni and got her first job in a bank, utilizing her degree. It’s not before long that Isobel becomes unhappy with her situation and wonders if she really could stay in this job for many years, or even until retirement.  She’s never had a plan B, but will a nonexistent plan B become her plan?

You Can Become Someone is a coming of age, finding yourself novel that follows Isobel as she matures and figures out her life.  It is very easy to sympathize or empathize with Isobel.  I know I was able to sympathize with her because I also went into a career that I don’t love.  It was nice to read about a woman coming to the realization that she is in charge of her own life, her own destiny.  Some of the choices we make may not make us the most money in the world, or may not make family members happy, but I think this book reinforces the lesson that we need to make the choices that are best for us.  We are the only ones who truly know what is best for us.

The book reads quickly, and it reads as though Isobel is talking to you.  However, sometimes it breezes so fast into the future that I felt it needed a bit more of a transition, or a bit more from the characters to make it feel smoother.

Overall, I would recommend this book! You can get your copy here.
