“To remind people, even little kids, that there’s evil in the world. We can try to pretend there isn’t, that the only thing sneaking around in the night is Santa with his bag of toys…”
I read this one without reading the synopsis, so I got quite a surprise. It’s Christmastime and Allison gets a call informing her that her mother has cancer and is dying. Allison is estranged from her mother but decides to go see her anyway. Her mother, Mavis, asks her t spend her last days with Allison and her family at Allison’s home. Mavis wasn’t a very good mother and she was an alcoholic. But she thought maybe they could somewhat reconcile. Mavis seems decent at first, if not outright friendly. But then strange things start to happen. Allison goes down a rabbit hole and suspects her mother is not who she says she is.
I probably should have looked into this book a little further before reading it. But alas, I read this one because it was so popular on Bookstagram. I don’t normally like supernatural type books, but this one was done very well, and I ended up really liking it.
McMahon takes you on a thrilling adventure. The prologue sets the tone for the entire book. It leaves you perplexed and wanting more. As I continued to read the book, I was more and more curious as to what was happening. As I said earlier, I didn’t read the synopsis so I didn’t know that this was the direction the book was going to take.
Allison was a great character. While sometimes, I questioned her sanity, especially because some of the circumstances of her life, I was with her along for the ride. I loved how curious she was and looking things up. I’m equally as curious and will go down rabbit holes myself.
The ending blew me away, and left it open for there to be a sequel. I don’t know that the author will write one, but I’d be interested in reading one!
