We Were Liars

By: E. Lockhart

“Silence is a protective coating over pain.”

I’m confused about all the hype surrounding this book. This is really about a wealthy white girl who goes on the same summer vacation with her extended family. There’s an accident one summer and she has amnesia about the accident and most of that summer. What exactly was the accident?

Okay.. this may be a rant and I’m sorry for that. First, this book was SOOOOO boring. I literally had some much trouble making it through this book. I was bored, I fell asleep, I found myself literally finding anything else to do other than read this book. If I was ever going to DNF a book, this would have been it. I did finish it because I was reading it for a book club.

Everyone, except maybe Gat, is insufferable. They are all wealthy, and the adults only care about what they stand to inherit from their father. It’s all rather annoying. The kids are a little bit better, but even they can be really irritating at times.

I guess the chapters were going back and forth, but it was hard to figure out. I know this is a young adult book, but the writing was so fragmented. I’ve read YA books before and have been thoroughly impressed. This just did nothing for me.

I did give it two stars because I probably didn’t pick up on some of the clues for big twist/reveal and that shocked me. Otherwise this book was not worth my time.

If you’re interested in it after reading my review, you can find it here.
