The title kind of says it all! The Golden Hotel, in the Catskills of New York, was very popular at one point. Think of the hotel like the one in Dirty Dancing, where people, mainly Jewish families, would go for the summer. There were activities, dance lessons, great food etc.. But now, it’s not doing so great. Occupancy is barely at 50% and there’s just so much that needs to be done. The hotel is owned by two families. There is an offer to buy the hotel/land from a company that wants to put a casino there, so the two families come together to decide what to do with the hotel.
Sorry ya’ll this book was BORING – yes in all caps. I literally had to force myself through this book; I did because it was my book club book. This is the first book that I seriously considering DNFing. All of the characters were really annoying. They were superficial rich people; everyone was super stereotypical, which for me just meant that the author did not try to be creative with her characters at all.
When there’s barely any dialogue like 20 pages in, I already knew that I wasn’t going to like it. There were gaps in time where people all of a sudden start dating and you don’t see the build up. It’s also called “Last Summer…” but really it’s 5 days and then skips to November. Where is the summer part? They talk about the memories, but there’s nothing actually happening. Then the author tried to throw in two twists and I just rolled my eyes. Especially because after the first one the author had the character make an assumption, but it was a terrible assumption.
Anyway, clearly this book didn’t work for me, but seeing the reviews, others liked it.
