“I never knew it could be this way … that love could catch you when you fell….”
This was a book club read for me, and I was unsure about it. Annie sends her daughter, Natalie, to the UK to stay with a host family. That same day, her husband tells her that he wants a divorce and is in love with another woman. Annie goes back to her hometown and stays with her dad. While she is there she runs into a childhood friend, Nick, who is widowed with a daughter who has not spoken since her mother’s death. Just when Annie thinks that she’s figured out what she wants, her world is turned upside down again, and the road she thought she was taken has now changed, and Annie has a decision to make.
This isn’t my favorite Kristin Hannah book, but I did enjoy it! There’s so much happening in this book. There’s the parent/child relationship; second chance romance; marriage and divorce; and self discovery. The relationship between Annie and Natalie was absolutely beautiful. But what this book did was magnify the need for fathers in children’s lives. Natalie’s dad was always working, and Nick was struggling after the death of his wife. I also loved how much Annie did for Nick’s daughter, Izzy. The had a great relationship and they made me cry!
I loved that Annie took time away to figure out herself, who she was outside of her marriage. It’s hard to become who you think you’re supposed to be when you’re in a marriage. Especially women – they are the mom, the housewife. They take care of everything. But Annie let what she wanted be pushed away. I loved her slowly becoming herself.
The romance was good too. Nick and Annie were childhood friends, and she really helped heal him. She helped him realize that even though is wife was ill and died, life can go on, his daughter still needed him, and there was so much more life to enjoy.
Overall, a beautiful book with some great messages.
