When Madeline received a letter from Eli while he was serving in the military, she felt betrayed and she hated him. It’s one year later and now he’s back. Her brothers make him her bodyguard. Now Madeline has to pretend that Eli never had her heart. Plus, she’s engaged to another man. As they spend more time together, lines are crossed. But she cannot let anything happen. Whether she likes it or not, she has to marry this other man. Even if it means ignoring how much she feels for Eli.
The is the second installment in the Alarie Heirs series, but can be read as a standalone. Though, I do highly recommend reading the first one because it was really good and it helps get to know some of the characters.
There is so much to love about this book. The Alarie family is a mafia family, but more importantly, they love each other and protect each other. That’s why they knew something was up with Madeline. I’m not a huge mafia romance reader, but this one strikes the perfect balance of mafia and romance – heavy on the romance. Oh, what chemistry did these two have! It was sizzling off the page. But it was more than just spice/physical for the two of them. They really love each other and it shows in the way they protect each other, the small moments together.
I went through book not figuring out Madeline’s motivations for her choices. There was a small crumb laid out which gave me somewhat of an idea, but the ultimate story behind what was happening I would have never guessed! It’s the perfect combination of mystery and romance!
I can’t gush enough about this book – you just have to read it yourself! (Which you should go do.. now!)
