The Best Promise

Many thanks to Torch Lit Ink for the ARC of this book!

Stevie Winters is heading back to Driscoll University, only she doesn’t have a place to live. Good thing Levi Clarke was looking for a roommate. Stevie has no friends, no boyfriend, and a medical condition. Levi has four best friends, a good job, and needs a roommate fast. He finds Stevie online and she moves in with him. Both keep pieces of themselves back for a bit, but eventually they open up to one another. Attracted to each other, the more time the spend together, the harder it is to ignore that attraction. But once they find out each others’ secrets and open up about who they are, will either of them run?

This is the second book in the Driscoll U series. I did not read the first and did not feel like I was missing out on anything. In this college romance, one of the bigger themes of this book is mutual healing. As Stevie and Levi get to know each other and get to know about each others’ pasts, they take the time that is needed to help heal themselves and each other. It was really kind of awesome.

This felt a little slow burnish to me. It was almost a will they, won’t they situation at first. Though it was nice to see them getting to know each other and being friends first. They had some good banter and a lot of chemistry. Then we move to the next phase of the book where the spice comes in. There is a LOT of praise kink; for me it was overdone. Also, at that point, it felt like every other page or every chapter was just spice. I almost forgot they had real feelings for each other. Then it all felt very similar every time I read it. I think some of it could have been cut out.

I loved how much Levi supported Stevie in multiple ways. She wanted to try new things such as signing in public and auditioning for the college musical, he helped her with that. She wanted a new style, he helped facilitate that. When her ex showed up at the bar they were hanging out, he stood up for her and protected her. It was really beautiful to read. I could have read more of this, and seen more support from Stevie towards Levi. She did support him, but it didn’t feel balanced.

Overall, this was an enjoyable read! I highly suggest you check it out, especially if you like spicy romances!
