By: Simone St. James

“I felt a sinister tug, like on a long-slack fishing line. The house in Fell was waking up, pulling on its strings. I wasn’t going to answer.”
I am not a huge paranormal thriller reader, but I love this author! Violet, Vail, and Dodie Esme were called back to the home where they fled 18 years ago. Their little brother, Ben, had disappeared and now he was calling them back. Violet is able to see ghosts and she feels the presence of Sister. But who is Sister and why did Ben’s ghost summon the siblings back to the house? As the siblings investigate, they uncover secrets and more ghosts.
I always know what I’m going to get when I read a Simone St. James book and I think that’s why I like them so much. The book is equal parts suspenseful and atmospheric. I had no idea which was this book was going to go, but I really enjoyed all of St. James’ choices and where it went.
The story is told with three different points of view – the three siblings. We also get to see the past and a little bit about how they grew up. Violet has the ability to see dead people, and she’s a divorced mom who was in a mental hospital and lost custody of her daughter. Vail is a supernatural investigator focusing on UFOs. Dodie is not like her siblings at all, she is outspoken and raw. In this book, we’re also back in the Sun Down motel world, and there is a mention of a boarding school – was that the one from The Broken Girls?!
There was one particular scene in the book that got to me, just because I could picture it and honestly it’s the very reason that I stay away from horror movies. No, it wasn’t gory, just very creepy! I also really enjoyed how St. James chose to end the book.
If you haven’t picked this one up yet, I suggest you do so!
