On September 11, 2001, Molly was 2 months old. Her mother was heading to a doctor’s appointment in the south tower and never came home. Molly’s dad remarried, and she grew up in a loving home. Now it’s 2026, and Molly is all grown up, and having a baby with her husband Jesse. Then, something unexpected happens and it throws everyone off their axis, and their worlds to be turned upside down.
This book took me longer to read than I expected, but not because of the book, because life and work got in the way. I will say though, there is a lot of back story at the beginning of the book and extra stuff in there that I think could be taken out, personally. But once we got to the end of the first part, I was hooked.
I thought this story was about 9/11, and while the events of 9/11 do play a part in this book, the crux of this story revolves around postpartum psychosis. This has been a very hot topic in the news due to the Lindsay Clancy trial, but it is something really important to discuss; it’s important for there to be more awareness. I didn’t have postpartum psychosis, but I did have post partum depression, and I lied to my doctor’s about it because I was embarrassed. I have very strong feelings around bringing awareness to these issues.
Picoult did a wonderful job handling this topic. It’s always so clear that she does her research so she can get it right in her books. I love that Picoult has the guts to put these topics in her books because they foster discussion. She also paid a beautiful tribute to those that died in 9/11 and their families.
I loved all of the characters, mostly (I mean, Chad?!). Jesse is so supportive of Molly, he’s a wonderful husband. There was a moment towards the end of the book that Adam made my heart melt.
This is a really beautiful story, and one that I think everyone should read.
