Things We Do In The Dark

By: Jennifer Hillier

“Because in the dark, it didn’t matter.  In the dark, it didn’t happen.”

Paris Peralta is arrested for the murder of her celebrity husband.  She is found in her bathroom, with the murder weapon in hand, covered in blood.  Her only concern? That with this media attention, someone from her past will find her and ruin her life.  Meanwhile, Ruby Reyes, who was convicted of murder 25 years earlier, is being released from prison – and she knows exactly what Paris is hiding and threatens to reveal Paris’ secrets.  Paris now must come face to face with her past in order to have a future.

The beginning of the book grabs the reader right from the start and it stays mysterious.  As I was reading, I was trying to figure out what was happening, but I couldn’t figure it out until Hillier wanted me to figure it out.  That’s exactly what makes a good book, and what I look for in a good book.  I was writing down theories at different points in the book, and my theories were all wrong!

Hillier’s character development is one of the best that I have read.  As a reader, I felt that I grew up with the characters.  I wasn’t left wondering anything about any of the characters.  Hillier made sure not to leave any loose ends.

I give this book a 4/5 because I felt that it did drag on just a tad.  This book was so hyped up that I expected to be on the edge of my seat the entire time, and I wasn’t.  However, it still is a very good book and absolutely earned it’s 4 stars from me!
