About the Book

wo total opposites. One race through the Great Outdoors. In this grumpy-sunshine teen romance from the author of Love from Scratch and Not Here to Stay Friends, the trail to true love doesn’t always come with a map.

Natalie Hart has always been loud, unfiltered, and unapologetically herself. But then comes her freshman year of college, when she loses her merit scholarship and gains one pesky little anxiety diagnosis.

Hesitant to take out more student loans, Natalie decides to shoot her shot and applies to Wild Adventures, a popular outdoorsy reality show. Sure, Natalie prefers her twelve-step skincare routine to roughing it on the Appalachian Trail while competing in challenges against other college kids, but that scholarship prize money is calling her name. High risk, high reward, right?

Enter Finn Markum, her randomly assigned, capital-O Outdoorsy teammate whose growl could rival a black bear. These partners have more friction than a pair of new hiking boots. Or is it flirtation? Turns out falling in love might be the wildest adventure of all…

My Review

This book was so cute! It’s funny and flirty; full of adventure and emotions. Natalie is a strong FMC. She knows who she is and she doesn’t apologize for it. I really loved that despite her parents not agreeing with her college degree choice, she went through with it anyway. I had a similar situation where I wanted to major in one thing but since my grandfather was paying for college, he told me that it wasn’t a real major and to pick something else. I wish I had enough courage as Natalie does! Finn is your typical grumpy character, but underneath it all, he’s a sensitive, vulnerable guy. I love how Natalie brings out the best in him. These two were really the perfect match.

I loved all the challenges along the way, I enjoyed the horse one, but I really liked the rope one across the water. I’d fall in a bunch of times just like Natalie. Finn was so encouraging of Natalie, and Natalie was the same for Finn. And while technically this book doesn’t take place over a large amount of time, nothing felt rushed between the two of them. Everything was sweet between them.

I also really loved Harper and Evan, two of the other contestants. They were really great side characters and deserve a story all of their own!

Five Things I Wish I’d Known as a Debut Author

By Kaitlyn Hill

  1. You are so much more than this book! It feels obvious now, but the time leading up to debuting puts you in such a weird mental space, it can seem like this book is the most important thing you’ve ever done or ever will do. Your life is so much bigger than that! Your publishing career will be, too! Take some of that weight off yourself.
  2. There are many readers out there who never post about books on social media! The wide worlds of bookstagram, booktok, goodreads, etc can feel like they encompass the entire reading population, so if you aren’t seeing your book make the rounds there as much as others seem to, it can be a bummer. But there are so many folks who buy and read books without ever engaging in those online communities! Your book will find readers, even if those readers aren’t tagging you in glowing reviews every day.
  3. On that note, do not read your reviews! ☺ I take pride in the fact that I was already pretty good at avoiding that with my debut, but could’ve always used an extra reminder when I got tempted. You can see ninety-nine incredible, super-flattering compliments on your work, but the one criticism will have more staying power in your mind. Seeking out the compliments is not worth stumbling upon the negativity, so don’t give in to the urge!
  4. Your book’s lifespan is a lot longer than publication week! I remember the sense of “…now what?” a couple weeks post pub day, like the peak of my book’s success had already been reached, so it would all be downhill from there. If you’re lucky like I’ve been with Love from Scratch, this is not the case! Even if it’s a slow burn, and there’s never a massive breakout moment where you sell a million copies in a week and top every bestseller list, having steady sales a year or two post-publication is an amazing feeling. I hear pretty regularly from brand new readers who’ve just found my debut, even though I’m three books in, and it’s still so cool and exciting.
  5. There’s always going to be more to reach for, but don’t let that keep you from enjoying where you are. Some of the things that have become my “normal” now were what the Kaitlyn of a few years ago considered pipe dreams. I have to step back and remind myself of that sometimes and appreciate how far I’ve come! There are still plenty of things I’d love to achieve and it’s good to keep that ambition, while also recognizing all the ways I’ve already “made it” to the goals I once had. I feel really lucky for all of it!

  1. Kaitlyn’s books sound like just the thing for many YA readers looking for a bit of swoony fun! Found it interesting that she advised new authors to skip reading their reviews, but her rationale makes sense.
