Alexis Turner goes to the police station to file a report about a sexual assault. By the end of the day, she’s disappeared. Then three packages show up for three different people – the outside looks the same, but what is inside is what is different. Detective Judith Lee is on the case, and is trying to link the three people. She’s up against the clock – a few people have died and she doesn’t want the body count to keep adding up. Will she be able to figure this out?
This is a slow burn mystery. I wouldn’t really characterize it as a psychological thriller. And if you’ve followed my reviews, you know that I don’t really love slow burns. The book did a great job drawing you in with the first chapter. I read it and I was ready for the ride. But then the ride was like being in a lazy river. Yes, there were some things going on with the packages being received, but it was more drama than thrills. If I had expected that going in, I might have enjoyed it a bit more. I was just expecting more thrills.
I did like Judith. I liked her perseverance, and that she didn’t necessarily care what the “rules” were. I also liked how she thought differently than everyone else. Because of that, she didn’t let up on a theory she had.
There was a good bit of action in the last 12minutes of the book, but that’s really where all the action was. Unfortunately for me, I needed it to come sooner. By the time It got to the reveal before the action, I didn’t really care… I hate that I’m saying that but it’s my truth.
I’m an outlier here. So many people love this book, so just take my opinion with a grain of salt. I know there are tons of people that love slow burns, so if that’s you, you’ll enjoy this book.
