Kyra an Tarek are back in this 5th installment of the Martha’s Vineyard Murders. Tarek is recovering from almost dying during the last case, and he’s not himself. Things are tense between the two. A body is found in a lighthouse and Kyra, and Tarek, are asked to help. But with Tarek pulling back, Kyra tries to go on the investigation without him. Things don’t go as smoothly as they usually do, and she’s in over her head. She refuses to give up. Then Kyra is taken, forcing Tarek to confront his past.
I probably said this with the last book, but each of these books is better than the last. This book is a little darker, with honest and real themes. When the book opens, we see Tarek struggling with his rehabilitation. He’s depressed, he’s moody, and he’s pushing Kyra away. This felt SO real. It was honest. I appreciated that the author included this in the book. It was handled so well. The author also had Kyra struggling to deal with it, as any significant other would. It really was very raw and real.
The author writes a thrilling, engaging, atmospheric, and suspenseful mystery. Ray has a way of writing that keeps you turning the pages. The writing flows nicely, and all of the characters are interesting in some way.
If you haven’t read Ray’s books, I implore you to check them out. I would read them in order so that you understand the characters better. Why would you want to miss out on a great mystery series?!
