Promise Me Never

By: Liv Constantine

Many thanks to Ballantine Bantam for the ARC of this book!

Savannah Brooks is an aspiring writer and works for a publisher. She comes up with a scheme to meet her favorite author, Bennett Bryson. When they meet, he’s enchanted with her. Very quickly they fall for each other and she says yes when he asks her to marry him. But once she’s married and moved in with him, things between them aren’t the same. He does read her work, but greatly criticizes its, snaps at her, tries to tell her where to go, and slaves away in his office. Savannah learns that he’s been engaged twice, married once, and all of those women have disappeared or died. On a walk with his dog, she gets a note – he’s not who you think he is. Savannah tries to figure out what happened to the other women before her, and whether she will be next.

Promise Me Never is an easy and fast read. With it’s short chapters and three different POVs and a dual timeline, it’s very much a book that you can read in one sitting. I liked Savannah as a character, though at times she seemed naive. Bennett on the other hand, well something seemed off. Not only had all those women disappeared and his wife die, he still seemed obsessed with his wife. Some of his comments were strange as well.

I thought I figured out where the author was going with this book, so I was shocked upon the first reveal. The second and third twist, I didn’t see coming from a mile away. Of course Liv Constantine is able to do that!

While this may not be my favorite by this author, it really is an enjoyable read.
