Henley Cole is a chef in New York. Her life is turned upside down in one instant, and she’s lost her career, her home, and what she thought her future would be. Emerson Lane is a racer. But after an unfortunate incident at the track, he has been suspended. Henley and Emerson spent a lot of time together as kids, he was her brother’s best friend. And now both of the are heading home. Both of them broken for different reasons. When they were younger, they had feelings for each other but Emerson kept hurting here. Is this their time for a second chance?
On top of this being a second chance romance, this book also discusses grief and familial relationships. Emerson had lost his mom to cancer and he struggled to deal with it – so he “ran” away and went to Texas for the opportunity to race. He rarely talked to his dad and never visited once she passed. How Emerson handled and reacted to grief felt very real. I especially enjoyed the conversation with his father that he had. There are also instances of panic attacks, and I think these were handled really well too.
Now, the banter and the chemistry between these two were off the charts! So much tension and so much angst, I loved it. There are some flashback chapters so we get the story behind the two and why they are where they are now.
